About Us & Our Logo
A Word from Our President/Director
We've got ribbons for breast and prostate cancer,
silicones bands for many a cause, but no international symbol
for eating disorders---nothing until now. As an eating disorder
survivor, I imagined a logo that would unite those with eating
disorders, have special meaning, a logo that would convey an instant
message of expression and permit anonymity. To accomplish
this, the logo would be adopted and donned by females or males,
those who did or did not have the disease, but wished to adopt
it by supporting someone in recovery.
The Women In Recovery from Eating Disorders (WIRED) Foundation is pleased to present this logo “ YY” as it’s official trademark. As many of you may know, the lone symbol “Y” is an ancient symbol, meaning woman or female. These two symbols enjoined signify a crossing of boundaries that invoke a symbol of unity and strength. Unity and strength in the battle against eating disorders by those who have an eating disorder, their families and friends.
You will find this logo in our YYIRED Foundation name, on our apparel , on our jewelry and anything else that we can stamp it on, sew it on, print it on or attach it to. We are out to change the world’s attitudes concerning eating disorders. Eating disorders for the most part are largely misunderstood by the general public and are either under diagnosed or misdiagnosed. Many who are diagnosed are turned down for treatment by insurance providers . According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, anorexia ranks as the third most common chronic illness among adolescent females in the U.S. Anorexia has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric illness( estimated to be as high as 9 to 10%), yet many with this disorder are denied the chance to get treatment. We should be outraged by these statistics.
Afford YYIRED the chance to change these sobering statistics by visiting our web site and telling your friends and family about us. We are a nonprofit organization looking forward to raising money through our web site and local fund raising efforts for general education, treatment and research, all paving the way to recovery for those who struggle with eating disorders everyday.
